Larnaca - Overview:

The Island of Cyprus is located at the Eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea to the south of Turkey. The Island was divided in 1974, into the Republic of Cyprus in the south and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. Currently only Turkey acknowledges the north, whilst the south has full international recognition.

Larnaca is located towards the south west of Cyprus with much of its economy based around commercial shipping and tourism. According to the Larnaca Chamber of Commerce and Industry “Larnaca has recently experienced a rapid growth in commercial and business activity through the opening of major shopping outlets and the upgrading of the downtown shopping centre.”

Since its foundation around 6000 years ago Larnaca has seen continuous habitation. A small portion of the district of Larnaca lies to the north of the “Green Line”, a buffer zone that extends 300 kilometres across the country, separating the Turkish controlled north from the rest of the island. To the east of the district is the Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area, which is a British military base. Larnaca International Airport is located a short distance south of the city and is the larger of the two airports operating in the Republic of Cyprus. The airport deals with around 5 million passengers, which is in excess of its intended capacity; currently work is underway to expand the airport and hopefully will be completed by 2009

Apart from its excellent beaches, museums and nightlife the district of Larnaca has a many places of interest of both archaeological and religious significance, an example being the Mosque of Umm Haram, which is one of Islam’s holiest shrines, but located in a largely Christian country.

The Republic of Cyprus has developed a modern and thriving open free market economy, which, according to the Central Bank of Cyprus, recorded real GDP growth of 3.4 per cent in the period 2000 to 2004.
